Taking Artifacts with Paper as a Carrier Substance out of their Frames

During the renovation of the Stedelijk Museum’s main building and the work on the new building located on Paulus Potterstraat in Amsterdam, the museum had been using temporary storage facilities located in an old factory in the western part of the Amsterdam harbour area. In 2008, new storage facilities were built just around the corner. Prior to the move to the new location, which had been planned for Spring 2009, it was decided that a portion of the approximately 9000 artifacts on paper had to be taken out of their frames. This was done to save space in new storage facility.

The artworks were taken out of their frames and were stored in self-constructed folders of acid-free cardboard with a transparent front of thick Melinex. Iconoco began this project in October 2008 which lasted until the end of that year.
